I believe that lasting internal change is possible when we are ready for it, no matter how stuck or desperate a situation may seem. But we often need more than to be just ‘ready’. We may need structure, support and an empathic witness to the process. These are the things I try to offer. My name is Andrew Asibong, and I am a counsellor and psychotherapist based in North Finchley in North London, with specialist expertise in inter-cultural psychotherapy, and particular interest in complex trauma disorder, including racialised trauma. I qualified from the professional training at the Tavistock Clinic in London, part of the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Since then, I have worked with a diverse range of clients, both in the NHS (East London NHS Foundation Trust) and in other organisations. I am a member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists and I am a registered professional member of the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), abiding by their code of ethics. Before becoming a full-time therapist, I was for 15 years a university lecturer and researcher. A lot of my early research revolved around the problem of how to depict human beings in the process of fantastical transformation. This question of metamorphosis – the perplexing but miraculous capacity for change at the heart of a life – has continued to fascinate me over the years, less as an intellectual ‘problem’ and more as an emotional and spiritual possibility. Here at colourfull, we were frustrated with the lack of research looking at the experience of LGBTQ people of colour (PoC) at work in today's world. So rather than complain, we decided to look into this ourselves and are collaborating with award winning journalist, Salma Haidrani to carry out research and investigate this important issue. Lessons  In The Life - The Black Queer Curriculum (Workshops & networking) Being Black and Queer in the UK  - what they didn't tell you in school BlackOut UK will bring together men of African descent who identify as gay/bi/trans or same-gender-loving (SGL) from across London in a relaxed and welcoming environment to share learning and fellowship, build networks, and develop relevant materials for other Black gay/bi/trans/SGL men and the communities of which they are part about our shared histories and future. Through a series of ½ day workshops, Lessons In The Life will create the materials for a ‘Black Queer Curriculum’, pooling our expertise in order to provide guidance and resources for other Black queer men – in particular those who have recently ‘come out’, and those who are new to the UK and/or London. The workshops will also be learning opportunities for participants who will be able to add to their knowledge as well as be supported by other Black queer men in developing skills which will be useful in their lives and in future collaborative activity with BlackOut UK. The workshops and curriculum will be delivered by a multi-disciplinary, inter-generational, team of Black queer men who will also be key partners in disseminating the outputs through their personal networks. He was a black migrant to interwar Britain; an aristocrat's valet in rural Wales; a Black queer man in 1930s London; an artist's model; a law student, a recruit to the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps and Prisoner of War during the Second World War. Gemma Romain explores the intersections of these diverse aspects of Nelson's life... FILM: VISIBLE, Campbell X; Kayza Rose How do Queer people of Colour (QPOC) find out about our history? How can we know about our history when so much becomes myth and gossip or when historians research through a Eurocentric ciscentric heteronormative paradigm? VISIBLE explores the challenges of QPOC history. VISIBLE is directed by Campbell X and produced by Kayza Rose.
